How exactly does a hand gel work?

Alcohol-based hand gels, like our Original, Moisture and Total Hand Gels, work by using a high concentration of alcohol (at least 57%) to kill bacteria on the surface of your hands. The alcohol penetrates the cell membrane of the bacteria and denatures it (meaning it changes the nature of the bacteria, making it inert). Cuticura Hand Gels has been proven to kill 99.99% of bacteria.

For alcohol-free products, like our Sensitive Hand Gel, alcohol is replaced by another active anti-bacterial ingredient called Benzalkonium Chloride.

How many times a day should you apply? Can you over apply the gel?

No. You can not over apply the gel. Extreme excessive use may lead to skin irritations but that would be no different than excessive hand washing. Product should be applied as and when you feel it is necessary throughout your day. Hand sanitisers, however, should be not be used as the sole means for hand cleaning. It is still important to wash your hands.

Is Cuticura anti-viral?

Our Total Protection Hand Gel has been tested against both bacteria and viruses, giving you even more protection.

What does dermatologically approved mean?

All of our hand sanitisers are dermatologically approved and this means that we have undertaken specific testing to prove that all our products are safe to use on skin.

Cuticura kills 99.99% of bacteria. What about the 0.01?

Due to the current European and British Standard test method, only a sample of the solution, not the whole solution, is tested. As a result, it is not possible to know if Cuticura Hand Gels have killed 100% of bacteria.

Is it safe and effective to use Cuticura Hand Gels?

Yes. Cuticura Hand Gels have been proven to be safe and effective when used as directed. Ethyl alcohol, the active ingredient in Cuticura’s alcohol-based gels, has been used safely by the public for decades and is one of the safest and most effective anti bacterial ingredients known.
