Practising good hygiene is the single most effective way to stop the spread of diseases like flu.
Understand when to wash your hands, how to properly use hand sanitisers such as Cuticura and how to get your children into the habit.
As you touch people, surfaces and objects throughout the day, you accumulate germs on your hands. In turn, you can infect yourself with these germs by touching your eyese, nose or mouth. Although it's impossible to keep your hands germ-free, washing your hands frequently can help limit the transfer of bacteria and viruses.
Always wash your hands before:
- Preparing food
- Eating - whether at home, in the office, at school or out and about
- Treating wounds or giving medicine
- Breastfeeding
- Touching a sick or injured person
Always wash your hands after:
- Preparing food, especially raw meat or poultry
- Using the toilet
- Changing a diaper
- Touching an animal or animal toys
- Blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing into your hands
- Treating wounds
- Touching a sick or injured person
- Handling garbage
Of course, it is also important to wash your hands whenever they look dirty.
A quick rinse or forgetting to use soap won’t give you clean hands.
- Wet your hands with warm running water
- Use a quality liquid or bar soap like Cuticura's Mildly Medicated Soap
- Lather well
- Rub your hands vigorously for at least 20 seconds. Remember to scrub all surfaces, including the backs of your hands, wrists, between your fingers and under your fingernails.
- Rinse well
- Dry your hands with a clean or disposable towel or air dryer.
- Use alcohol-based hand sanitiser that is at least 60 percent alcohol.
- Use a ten pence-size dollop of the sanitiser. There should be enough of the product to wet your hands completely.
- Rub your hands together until they are dry.
- Make sure to cleanse the top and bottom of hands, in between the fingers and in the nail bed. If your hands are noticeably dirty, however, wash with soap and water
- If you get dry skin, try our Cuticura Hand Hygiene Lotion with added moisturisers
- For those who prefer not to use a product that contains alcohol, there is also alcohol free hand sanitiser options in the Cuticura range such as our foamers.
Help your children stay healthy by encouraging them to wash their hands properly and frequently. Wash your hands with your children to show them how it's done.
To prevent rushing, suggest washing their hands for as long as it takes to sing the "Happy Birthday" song twice.
Alcohol-based hand sanitisers are ok for children over the age of 2 years. Cuticura has also available non-alcohol options.
